Georgia O'Keeffe was not part of the Surrealist movement and is loosely classified as a Modernist, but it would be wrong to suggest that none of her work cannot be placed in this bracket. Dali would use neutral backgrounds in his work in order to bring the full focus towards the main element of the artwork. O'Keeffe continues that method in this artwork with her own characteristic choice - that of bones from her local environment. She would use all manner of animal bones, leaves and similar as the key element of her work. O'Keeffe was always close to nature and appreciated the way in which New Mexico could add so much influence to her work.
The artist also used animal bones in many titles.
